Shadow a Veterinarian tours are suitable for adults and for children 12 years old or older*. Spend five hours with Senior Veterinarian Dr. Jb Minter as he makes rounds behind-the-scenes at the NC Zoo. Ask all the questions you want and learn how veterinarians care for the medical woes of lions, bears, snakes and other animals. After rounds, head back to the vet hospital to enjoy a pizza lunch while chatting with the veterinary staff.
Sign up to Shadow a Veterinarian for a donation of $550. We offer one reservation per month from March through October. Secure your Shadow a Veterinarian reservation by clicking on the month of your choice above.
Shadow a Veterinarian tours are usually scheduled on Saturdays. Begin by selecting a Saturday that will work for you, or specify an alternative date if necessary; we will then confirm what date works best with the veterinarian's schedule. Programs can be scheduled on a weekday, too, but offer less flexibility than tours conducted on Saturdays.
* Special Shadow a Veterinarian Tours can be arranged for youngsters 7 years-old or older, but a child this young must be accompanied by a paying adult.
iVeterinarian is a special program for 5th and 6th graders who want to grow up to be veterinarians! iVeterinarian simulates a veterinary mystery that can only be solved by using clues found from microscopes, physical exams, lab tests, sonograms and other technologies. And, everyone gets a chance to shoot a dart gun!
This program is suitable for a parent and a child to explore together, and is strictly limited to 20 participants.
